ZONEfest – community campus culture.

Zonefest 2009 went extremely well last Saturday 2nd May with all 12 acts performing over 12 hours including our own International students who performed Bolywood style dancing. Judith Alexander, Zone Manager is extremely proud of the 21 students who in five months and through regular meetings delivered a fantastic 12 hour event. Congratulations to all the students involved who have shown dedication, perseverance, passion, belief and self motivation to deliver a fabulous event which will become an annual festival which aims to unite the Wrexham community with Glyndŵr University. Zonefest’s team range from 19 to 60 years old, from foundation to postgraduate level, from subject areas as broad as art & design, engineering, humanities and MBA, and are from the UK, New Zealand, India & Bangladesh, they are:

Gareth Williams, Steven Collins, Timm Harris, Beth Hughes, Ravi Sharma, Steven Dwight, Claire Brock, Sunil Singh, David Williams, Pam Smith, Roy Sushanto, Azemery Jhan, Venkat Narsing Nayak, Ankush Jassal, Adnan Mir, Owais Shora, Adil Lanker, Ishfak Shah, Howhar Shh. Also a huge thank you to Darren Hughes (sound) and Paul Griffiths (DJ Pablo) both students volunteered their skills from 10 am until after midnight.

The above enterprising students wish to thank all the staff members who got involved, offered advice and helped with equipment – ‘a special thank you must go to Graham Lloyd for dedicating so much time and supporting the event from the off. Lynda Powell, Matthew Hart, Tony Hawkins & Karen Lennox for also believing in the idea and sponsoring the event, to everyone at Calon FM for their coverage and Zoe Brunt for bringing her gorgeous crafts along on the day and Andy Cheatham for sorting us out with the spotlights. Apologies to all those who have been missed off the list – there are just so many of you to thank! Thanks also to Dominos Pizza who supplied our bands, performers and team members with free pizza during the festival and Lidl for their kind donation of soft drinks’ www.zonefest.co.uk

The ZONE service can help students develop and deliver their own projects throughout the year – we can offer mentoring, dedicated creative meeting space and access to IT facilities. To discuss what Zone can do for your students please pop in or call Judith on ext: 3297 or 3238.

FLUX 09 6 – 8th April 09. Glyndŵr University students from Computing, Art & Design and Media competed in Flux 09 amongst 30 other University teams over three days at Plymouth University. The panel of experts were very impressed with our students who had just one hour to come up with a global business idea. The students presented ‘Indie Sim’ – a new type of sim card for mobile phones allowing users to receive specific marketing based on the user’s interests and location. The students had only five minutes to pitch their idea in front of a panel of 12 judges and six other university teams. Judith Alexander, Zone Manager accompanied the students on the trip and spoke to some of the experts who thought the idea was very viable and could be taken further. Well done Gareth Williams, Steve Dwight, Sriharsha Kandikattu, Ian Lee, Martyn Eker & Daniel Groom. Staff within the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning are trained facilitators in FLUX, it is an excellent tool to embed enterprise and entrepreneurship into the curriculum.

The idea here is to highlight the cut /copy and poor quality images that pirates and bootleggers produce.

so when you are at a market stall and you see these bootleg dvds with stretched images like they have been photocopied is just not cool.

teh idea with the posters was to go one step further so the actual pirate fim was in teh cinema so like teh film companies have just given up and instead of making expensive hollywood movies they just make the pirated style from teh outset.

the message is that this will happen if we dont all combat piracy and dont fund them.

what do you think?
